Valentine’s
Valentine’s
Day, one of the most awaited celebration worldwide. In fact, it is one of the
most romantic celebrations of all time. Valentine’s Day is a day for love.
Naturally this celebration would attract the attention and be the priority for
many young couples. Even old married couple are not willing to back down as
they try to ignite the old flames back by celebrating this day of love.
When
we say Valentine it is the most common thing for a person to start imagining
big bouquet of roses, boxes of chocolates, big soft toys and occasionally a
cupid with an arrow to shoot. However, I would dare say, though many of us
celebrate this innocent celebration, we do not know of its origin. We do not
know how it all began.
One
of the most famous legends on how Valentine’s Day started was by Saint
Valentine of Rome. The ruler of Rome was Emperor Claudius II. The emperor was
said to have issued an order stating that men in Rome were not allowed to
marry. His justification for that action was that married men made poor
soldiers. This command came as a shock to all the young lovers in Rome.
Valentine
saw the injustice that was being done and disagreed with it. In return he found
a way to retaliate; he married the young lovers in secret. He has brought many
couples together successfully in holy matrimony. Not only that, it was also
said that he even helped some Christians to escape the harsh prisons of Rome.
However,
his actions were soon discovered by the authorities and was captured and put to
prison. While being in prison it is said that St. Valentine cured his jailer’s
blind daughter by giving her the ability to see again. After doing so she would
often visit him in jail. Soon enough they both fell in love with each other.
However,
Valentine’s life was limited. He was sentenced to death by the emperor because
he went against him, at first in secret, but soon as he got captured, he
started having many supporters. He was viewed as threat and decided that death
is the only solution towards this problem.
Many
protested against this decision, but they themselves are helpless against the
decorum as they do not have the power to fight against it. It was soon before
the dreaded day arrived. The town square was filled with people as they wanted
to see their beloved St. Valentine for the last time. Before he left to be
executed, Valentine wrote a letter to his lover, and at the end of it he
signed, “With love,
you’re Valentine.”
When
word got around about what Valentine did, it took the world by a storm.
Everyone now celebrates love on the day Valentine had martyred for love. Young
lovers will take this opportunity to express their love. Most of them will send
cards and they will end it the same legendary way, “With
love, you’re Valentine.”
